Apr 24, 2010 - @hmsrenown That's not true at all. It depends how your organization is run. Take a look at the Red Wings. They are cup contenders virtually every year because they have the best run NHL organization. Look at the Patriots in the NFL. Like the Wings, they are contenders every year because they build their team through the draft and compliment their players with solid role playing free agents. Teams don't have to rebuild if they're run smart.

hmsrenown Says:

Apr 24, 2010 - @BoSoxnation1972 Indeed, but these teams are few and far between. You have to get very lucky as well, no matter how good your scouting and development is.

BoSoxnation1972 Says:

Apr 24, 2010 - @hmsrenown I agree they are few and far between, but that's because there are so many lazy organizations, and so many billionaire absentee owners who just want their check from revenue sharing and use the team as a tax writeoff. The Patriots lose at least 1 coordinator practically every season, and have a new GM, but still maintain the same organizational philosophy.

hmsrenown Says:

Apr 24, 2010 - @BoSoxnation1972 You forgot that Pats have the payroll and the fan support to do it, other teams doesn't have the same thing, especially in the NHL where a cap system is in place, more cap management from a bright GM is absolutely crucial, I guarantee you if New Jersey fire Lou right now, they're gonna be out of the playoffs in 2 years maximum.

BoSoxnation1972 Says:

Apr 25, 2010 - @hmsrenown The Patriots have the payroll to do what? I'm not sure if you are familiar with a little thing called a SALARY CAP in the NFL? It's been around a lot longer than the NHL salary cap. Hell, the Patriots have cut or traded their best defensive player 3 times because of the salary cap! Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, and Richard Seymour!

hmsrenown Says:

Apr 25, 2010 - @BoSoxnation1972 sorry i got my teams mixed up i meant to say teams like bosox :( But on the Pats issue, hockey salary cap works a lot differently, and takes a lot more manipulation to get the right mix, especially when in hockey, prospects generally needs time to develop, even grand slam prospects like Doughty and Stamkos, took them a full year before they got good. In the NFL? nah, you just jump in and be Adrian Peterson and pwn face.

hmsrenown Says:

Apr 25, 2010 - @BoSoxnation1972 Oh and I should say that football is fundamentally different from hockey, a lot of the times you CAN afford to lose that star player for the season, but imagine Red Wings without Datsyuk or Kronwall...They would be hurting like any other team.

BoSoxnation1972 Says:

Apr 25, 2010 - @hmsrenown Listen Booster, the NHL salary cap is no more complicated than the NFL cap. NFL teams have to deal with rookies who have never played a single down getting 50 million dollar contracts with 30 of it guaranteed. There is no rookie cap in the NFL, which the NHL has, making it exponentially easier! And as far as jumping right in, you're retarded. Adrian Peterson is the exception, not the rule. Tom Brady never played a snap his rookie year.

BoSoxnation1972 Says:

Apr 25, 2010 - @hmsrenown No, football is not different fundamentally from hockey. Both are team sports and losing 1 player in either sports basically the same impact. Taking Tom Brady off of the Patriots turned them from a 16-0 team, to an 11-5 team the next year. If you take Ovechkin off of the Caps, you'd see a very similar slide in winning percentage for the Caps.

hmsrenown Says:

Apr 25, 2010 - @BoSoxnation1972 Well good point on AP being the exception, but I'm also gonna point out we got sidetracked here, it's almost impossible to avoid rebuild, it's either a short or a long process.

hmsrenown Says:

Apr 25, 2010 - @BoSoxnation1972 without ovie they're still winning, and they showed in the playoffs too when ovie totally fell asleep for a couple games, because caps are a damn strong team. Think again, it's depth issue that is at play, and also extended ice-time to some of the players who physically can't get used to it in a hurry.

BoSoxnation1972 Says:

Apr 25, 2010 - @hmsrenown Ovie didn't fall asleep. Montreal was doing a great job of shadowing him through the neutral zone, not allowing him to enter the offensive zone with any momentum or to enter it with the puck. Now without Ovechkin, Washington might still be a playoff team, but they'd probably be a 7 or 8 seed. And I agree depth is important-it is why the Patriots could cut their best defensive player, and still won the superbowl.

BoSoxnation1972 Says:

Apr 25, 2010 - @hmsrenown I agree we got sidetracked, but one thing you didn't address was that NHL players are drafted at a much younger age. The average NFL draftee is 22 years old.Now again, if a team is run properly, you wont need to rebuild, even in a salary cap league. You will however have to move popular talent in their prime, as the Patriots have done.
